Having moved from England to start a new job as a design teacher at nearby Wells College, Mr. MacKenzie-Childs hadn’t set out to start a tableware and crafts company, but a new financial quandary presented itself — the couple’s then-9-year-old daughter wanted to attend ballet school back in England, and they didn’t have the means to send her. Together with Ms. Mackenzie-Childs, who spearheaded the project, the couple began selling hand-crafted dining and kitchen wares that they made on the premises.
